First, congratulations on your new addition! As a Dad myself, I know how exciting (and a little scary) this time is for you. Secondly, I hope this article puts your mind at ease about your pregnancy and the chiropractic care you will receive. Should you have additional questions or concerns that are not addressed here, I would be happy to discuss your case with you personally.
What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care is the health maintenance of the spinal column, discs, related nerves and bone geometry. Chiropractic care involves the art and science of adjusting misaligned joints which reduces spinal stress, therefore promoting health throughout the entire body.
What are the benefits of pregnancy chiropractic care?
- Maintaining a healthy pregnancy
- Controlling nausea
- Increasing the likelihood of a full term delivery
- Reducing the stress of labor & delivery
- Relieving back, neck & sciatic pain
Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?
Chiropractic is extremely safe, effective and natural health care for mom and baby. The best time to see a chiropractor is before conception as the pelvis will maintain balance more easily without the stress of the baby on her spine. The tables we use adjust for a pregnant woman’s body and we use techniques that avoid unneeded pressure on the abdomen. It is never too late in the pregnancy to seek chiropractic care.
Why should I have chiropractic care during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, there are several physiological and endocrinological changes that occur in the preparation for creating the environment for the developing baby. The following changes could result in a misaligned spine or joint:
- Protruding abdomen and increased back curve
- Pelvis obliquity
- Poor body mechanics
- Posture changes
Ribcage enlargement increasing rib subluxation
The above factors increase the frequency of vertebral subluxation, muscular spasm, soft tissue pain and altered spinal biomechanics. These issues typically respond well to chiropractic care. Establishing balance and alignment of the pelvis and spine is essential during pregnancy. When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery.
