The Paragard Intrauterine Device is a hormone free contraceptive method. Paragard works by interfering with the sperm before it reaches the egg.  It is effective for up to 10 years, but can be removed earlier if pregnancy is desired. Because it is hormone free it will not interfere with the  menstrual cycle.  Side effects of the Paragard include heavy periods, cramping upon insertion, IUD expulsion, and a small risk of uterine perforation upon insertion.
