What is a HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAM?
An HSG or hysterosalpingogram is a test often recommended during initial evaluation of infertility. It is an x-ray that looks at the inside of the uterus and the fallopian tubes.
How is an HSG performed?
A small tube is placed in the uterus through the vagina and dye is injected while the x-ray is being performed.
Does this test hurt?
There may be some discomfort during the test, but overall it is not painful.
What is the HSG test looking for?
The pictures can tell us if there are any problems with the uterus itself, including fibroids, adhesions or scar tissue from previous surgery or infection or if either of the tubes is blocked, preventing sperm from reaching the egg.
When should I get this test done?
This test should be performed just after your menstrual cycle and prior to ovulation to prevent any unintended radiation to an early pregnancy.
