Dr. Susan Powell was raised on the Pacific coast in Seattle, Washington. She is a graduate of Scripps Women’s College in Claremont, California where she studied French Literature and Women’s Studies, taking an entire year abroad to study at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. After graduating from Scripps, Dr. Powell took advantage of several travel opportunities exploring the Pacific coast of Mexico and the gulf coast of Texas. She fell in love with the big Texas skies, the warm, friendly people, saltwater fishing, and the constant sunshine! After working with a long-established community pediatrician in Corpus Christi, Texas for two summers, she attended The University of Texas at Austin for 2 years to add several premedical science requirements so she could apply to medical school and fulfill that dream of becoming a pediatrician and working with children and their families. Susan was accepted at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, the highest ranking medical school in Texas and one of the top twenty medical schools in the United States. At Baylor, Susan worked with diverse patient populations including the private hospitals Methodist and St. Luke’s and Texas Children’s hospital and Ben Taub Hospital serving indigent patients. Upon receiving her M.D., Susan stayed at Baylor College of Medicine for her residency in Pediatrics, one of the top pediatric residency programs in the country.
Since completion of residency, Susan has sought a diverse set of clinical setting to expand her growing knowledge base. This included 9 months of training as a developmental/behavioral pediatrician working with special needs children and those with learning disabilities. She worked in various private practice settings in Houston, TX and San Francisco, CA. Her love of Texas brought her and her family back to the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area. Wanting to balance raising her two school-age children with her love of pediatrics, Susan spent 12 years working shifts in the urgent care clinic of the Emergency Room at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, most recently as the Assistant Director of that clinic.
Outside of the workplace, Susan enjoys traveling to the beach in Mexico and to Europe, fishing the flats along the gulf coast, expanding her culinary skills, and watching the Rangers with her 18 year old son and shopping with her sixteen year old daughter.
Now that her own son and daughter are leaving the nest, Susan is now primed and ready to devote herself full-time to taking care of your children in her new practice at MacArthur Pediatrics. Her life experiences as a mother of two children, having served the full range of patient populations, worldly perspective, and love of kids and their parents ensures a fulfilling experience for you and your children.
