Fibrocystic breast disease is a non-cancerous breast condition in which tender lumps can cause pain and discomfort related mainly to a woman’s monthly fluctuating hormones. It is a very common condition affecting at least 50% of women of childbearing age. Fibrocystic breast changes often present as multiple swollen, tender lumps in both breasts that tend to start just prior to a woman’s period and disappear shortly afterwards.
There is no cure or treatment for this condition, but there are ways to treat the symptoms of breast tenderness and swelling. These include applying heating pads or ice packs to the breasts, wearing tighter fitting bras, and taking NSAIDs like Ibuprofen or Motrin.
